"I didn't want to just open a 'straight' bar. I wanted to create a place for the community."
Marianne van der Wildt didn’t set out to open just another bar. She wanted to build something meaningful. When she opened Bar Buka in Amsterdam, her goal was to create a genuine community space where LGBTQI+ people, especially queer women, could feel welcome, seen, and at home. Far from a generic “straight” bar, Bar Buka has become a vibrant queer hub known for its inclusive atmosphere, community events like karaoke nights, and as a place where friendships and connection flourish.
